Annual Eye Exams are Crucial to Your Eye Health

Many eye diseases are asymptomatic; they reduce your vision so gradually, you don’t even realize it’s happening. By the time you’ve noticed the loss, the damage is already done and it can’t be undone.

Your optometrist is trained to look for early signs of eye disease. By getting an annual eye exam, you’re taking eye health into your own hands and making proactive moves against eye disease. Book your eye exam with us and we’ll help you safeguard your eyes against vision loss.

Retinal Imaging Grants Us a Closer Look at Your Eye Health

We prescribe retinal imaging to help us ensure optimal eye health. By using two pieces of particularly advanced technology, we can closely inspect the interior structure of the eye, searching for any indication of potential issues.

Digital Retinal Photography

Because the retina consists of many layers, sometimes problems can appear below the surface, making them more difficult to detect. An Optomap exam gives us a better look at the different layers of the retina.

Optomap

The optomap uses a low-powered laser to scan your retina, using different frequencies to make up a single image. When we look at the image, we can filter certain frequencies, allowing us to thoroughly inspect a number of retinal layers, rather than just one. An optomap exam gives us a more comprehensive view of your retinal health.

What to Expect From a Shelburne Primary Eye Care Exam

Our primary focus is you and the health of your eyes. When you come to us for an eye exam, you can expect clear, honest answers, comprehensive care, and time to address your concerns. You’re more than just a set of eyes to us, so we want to make sure you feel comfortable and confident in the care you’re receiving.

We encourage you to ask your questions, bring up your concerns, and request clarity any time you need it.

We Go the Extra Mile to Protect Your Eyes

Our patients tell us our eye exams are the most thorough they’ve ever experienced. This is no accident. We’re firm believers in prevention over intervention, so we take extra steps to detect any problems with your eyes and recommend the necessary tools, medications, or lifestyle changes to maintain healthy vision.

Testing Your Vision

During your exam, we’ll conduct a number of tests to check your acuity, eye teaming, depth perception, as well as the general health and condition of your eyes. Some of these tests are as simple as reading a wall chart. Others use incredibly high tech machines. Regardless of the test, your comfort and understanding is paramount to us. Here are a few of the tests we may use in your eye exam.

A visual field test allows us to measure your peripheral vision. We’ll have you look at an object in front of you and move a second object forward from the side of your head. You’ll let us know once you can see the second moving object, which gives us a good idea of where your side vision begins and ends. A visual field test helps us determine if you’re experiencing any vision loss from something like glaucoma.

Your optometrist shines a small, thin sheet of light onto the surface of your eye. We may drop a little bit of yellow dye into your eye to help us find small injuries, or we may dilate your pupil to give us a better look at your eye’s interior.

Glaucoma affects intraocular pressure, so we use non-contact tonometry to test for high intraocular pressure and by extension, glaucoma. This process allows us to take our measurements without ever touching your eye; all you feel is a small puff of air in each eye.
