The Link Between Dry eyes & LASIK

Dry EyeLASIK, a popular vision correction procedure, uses a laser to reshape the cornea. While LASIK is considered very safe and effective, it does have some potential side effects, including dry eyes.

At Shelburne Primary EyeCare in Shelburne, we diagnose and treat dry eyes caused by LASIK and other reasons.

Most Common Post-Op Side Effects of LASIK

Dry eyes are a common side effect of LASIK, with many patients experiencing symptoms in the days, weeks, and months following the procedure. These symptoms can affect your daily life.

While LASIK is safe for most individuals, some may not be suitable candidates for the procedure.

Am I More Likely To Experience Dry Eye?

To correctly manage and relieve dry eye symptoms related to LASIK, it's essential to understand the causes and risk factors.

The damage to the corneal nerves during the LASIK procedure makes the cornea less sensitive to stimuli. This affects the production of tears and, ultimately, dry eyes.

Not all patients are equally susceptible to LASIK-related dry eyes. The following can further the likelihood of dry eye symptoms:

  • Preexisting dry eye syndrome
  • High myopia
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Certain medications
  • Living in a dry climate
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Keratoconus

In such cases, alternative vision correction options may be considered.

If you're dealing with dry eyes after LASIK or for any other reason, at Shelburne Primary EyeCare in Shelburne we're here to help.
